In this set of questions, when you see the term "medical condition" please respond in terms of your PRIMARY condition
Items 1, 2, 6, & 7 are worded in the negative direction and need to be reverse-scored prior to summing (or averaging) them with the positively worded items (3, 4, 5, & 8). If a patient gives a valid (i.e., non-missing) response to at least six of the eight items in the PMCSMS, a score can be calculated by substituting the patient's mean score on the valid items (after reverse-scoring items 1, 2, 4, and 7).
The higher patients' scores on the PMCSMS, the greater the patients' belief that they are capable of self-managing their medical condition. There are no established cut-points for what is considered a "sufficient" amount of self-management self-efficacy.
